Excellent Brother Mc G I hope they make a rack version as well.
If I'm starting from zero and have only a bass and ny DAW... This SansAmp XB or Darkglass Microtubes Infinity?
Two really different units. I would sit with the features of each and decide what you need most
thats a super nice preamp! its really similar to the ampeg svt 5 pro i have but without the crossover, i might have to try one
I heartily recommend it
The bass sound on Tempo of The Damned is one of the best I ever heard
Thanks Rodney very happy to see another video from you!!( It's been a minute) I love the quote "I am trying to destroy the guitar player will to live"😂😂 great review. I am definitely picking this up. Great review as always!! Have a wonderful day!
Thanks so much, Tony!
I really want to add one of these to my board soon. I’ve been running the RBI for years but I’ve been wanting to go rackless.
I am on vacation. Bought a very interesting book to read within the days. Know what? I haven't finished a chapter, because I am watching the channel videos one after another)
High praise! Glad you're enjoying it
Sounds awesome but that price tag is rough
This sounds great!!!!
It's a beast for sure
Great tone advice that really can be used on anything thanks
Whoa, what a nice piece of gear! If I didn't already have the BDDI and SH-1, I think I'd get this thing for sure. Good stuff as always Rodney!
Thanks!
Such a sick pedal, could really base a board around that one pedal. it's cool that it is all analog as well!
Being analog definitely sets it apart
Yes better a Analog Kid than a Digital Man
@@jameslangford9347Love the Rush reference!!!
@@bassplayer807 it’s fun making sentences with song titles
Man... The DP-3X was good enough for me. Then they throw this in the mix...
I'm so with you! 🤣🤣
Fantastic review, Rodney! I’m super low-tech, but I was actually able to make sense of the XB’s operation, -with your help here. I dig the tones, I’m definitely considering buying one. I already use a GED-2112/Stereo Power amp/separate cabinets setup, but it’s sometimes too much gear for certain rooms. Will the XB drive a stereo power amp? I’m thinking about an XB/power amp/single cabinet setup for smaller rooms, provided the XB can serve as a preamp. If not, I’ll be buying a Sansamp RBI. Thanks again for the excellent review, Best Regards!!!
Thanks, Darwin! Glad you liked it. The XB Is designed as a preamp, so it will work as well for you as the 2112 or the RBI. Hope that helps.
Great seeing you are in good health and putting out great content again!!!
Thanks, Ed!
« I like to destroy the guitarist’s will to live »… I just LOVE it! As always, great advices! With your thought process in this video, it really helped me to set my own tone with my own rig and my own ears! Thank you so much for this wonderful post!
Glad you got something from it!
I appreciate the work you put into this review. But to my ears the final tone sounded horrible. And it seems like the nuances you described when shaping the tone would be almost inaudible in a band mix. The more gear reviews I watch, especially of preamps/DI, the more it reminds me of hi-fi reviews where reviewers justify spending BIG money on equipment to hear the most subtle differences. In a bass context, shifting the position on the string could have a more dramatic difference. But again, maybe I just don't have great ears
To each tier own
my favorite thrash metal bass player from my favorite thrash metal band, love that bass tone its his personal signature
dammit......I knew this would be amazing....
They are just awesome.
Very sad to hear! (I'm new to the great channel and have just discovered the video.) Hoping for a wonder and your rehabilitation. Unfortunately, i don't have a possibility to donate, since the wire transfers are prohibited from my county now (I'm in Russia). Tons of your useful content is valuable 'footprint' from you, Rodney, in this world for many of us.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. I'm still here and moving forward, so we'll see how it goes!
I am a fan of your approaches and conclusions, Rodney
Thank you!
"...harmonics only whale can hear...")))) i'm enchanted by the phrase
Finally, one Sansamp to rule them all! Don't see myself needing the DP-3X, Gedal, or VT after this comes out. Really liked the step by step tone shaping Rodney, there's a lot of knobs on this thing and some subtle interactions and it's great to have a tutorial like this.
Glad you enjoyed it
Finally! Someone breaking it down. I've watched this video about 8-10x. I'm so much closer to the tone I've been hearing in my head for so long. I don't have the 2nd compressor for the output... yet. I've been tweaking the input compressor, EQ, drive, and blend. It's getting sooo close. I think just a little compression on the back side could lock it in.
Awesome! Glad I could help. Go get it!
Tanks very useful and professional. Any headphones plug?
No headphones
None better to show this pedal off than Rodney McG!
This is one killer piece of gear from Tech21 I absolutely love the separate EQ that’s the issue I have with a lot of pedals like this, but they nailed it, great review Rodney! Always enjoy a new video from you
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
"I'm usually trying to destroy the guitar player's will to live." Hahahaha!!!! Love it!!!
Sexcited!
Really nice that they actually included fully adjustable and separate filters, instead of just one combined crossover. Like you said in a video about a different drive pedal, you can easily cut away a lot of the unwanted mids by not having the two filters cross over each other.
Totally agree!
Sounds like a great pedal but 700 euros in EU is insane
Wow you use AMT pedals? I use their wah pedal, it sounds good. And extremely compact.
Yes I do! I use a lot of AMT gear. I'll be showing more of it here soon.
I enjoy metal bass, but I will say using double thumbing and all other techniques improve all forms of music.I think dig in on scales.patterns. picking hand techniques.❤also cover some intricate victor wooten songs.or some archspire basslines.ppl dig that I know I do.So if you play and tab ppl enjoy that. They can learn new techniques from them.
I was thinking about a radial bass 🦴 This sounds good though as well❤
ok.. but I’ll stick with my VT Bass DI my amp has a comp btw: I live in cover band land and these tones are not really usable for the most part
I've always posted clips, (usually with my own bad playing), to try and show why I like certain pieces of gear and how I use it. But you are right that a lot of people just suggest what they like instead of keeping the original post in mind. And I love my Darkglass VMT, but I also love the Reiner Gasoline, Tech21 Oxford(not an SVT guy) and old Peavey bass amps. And my JohnK remakes of Peavey preamps. Why Peavey? Billy Gould!
Billy Gould FTW!
@@RodneyMcG right on man. ofc you can tell by my username I love Billy’s tone and playing. I esp loved his old filthy tone in Chuck era. It’s way easier I’ve found with shaved maple basses with a brittle abrasive high end. I have a Ric but recently built a few P basses from it. The best one was when I shaved the body 2/3 as thick as a regular P bass. The high end from it sounds like glass shards and metal
Any post with billy could in it gets a thumbs up from me!
Is the “Tuner Out”, truly a “pass through” and not affected just like DI? I think it would be nice to have an unaffected like to backline.
It is totally unaffected
Goodbye money!!!
Would this pedal be like having the rack mounted RPM and RBI together like Geddy Lee used?
In a way, but way more capabilities and tone sculpting
Noob question here, what does Rodney mean when he says "tag"?
Can you tell me how i used the word? (context) and i'm happy to explain.
Fuck yeah!!!!
The main essence in that bite - new strings! Makes the job 60% easier. I've enjoyed diversifying from the Sans Amp by also using the MXR M80, and sometimes I use them together to accent different elements of both. Cracking video as always and good to see you back at it.
Right on!
Which do you think was worse, Talkbass or the Dream Theater forums back in the day? (I got banned from Talkbass after selling some used strings for 40 dollars (upright strings) because the guy who bought them didn't like them.
Cheers for that Rodney . You also look healthier , I am happy for that.
Thank you Dimitri!
Yep you sold me on it and I was already sold on it haha. Awesome review and explanation of how it works!
Glad I could help!
Very nice tones, and got to love the use of the Jeff loomis signature too.
A masterclass on tone shaping. 🫵👍
Many thanks!!
Gday Rodney!! Dont know anything about tech, so im stoked to have come across your channel. My towns about 10 sq/miles. So they're stuffed if i go deep on the journey. Cheers 🤙
The good thing about living now is you access anything from anywhere. Glad you found the channel, thanks for checking it out.🤘
Cheers Rodney. You always do amazing videos. Most of all I sincerely want you to know how happy I am to see how good/healthy you look. I hope you feel as good. I don’t know you but I think you do a lot of good and I learn whenever I watch your videos. I apologize if I overstepped by saying things like that, it comes from a good place.
Wow, thank you. I truly appreciate the kind words. Thanks for stopping in.
THIS is impressive. Knew you would put this thing through the paces to get a good look at what this thing can do. Definitely looks like the knobs "a little bit goes a long way" kind of sensitive. Does the crossover sound pretty decent in reverse ( hpf turn ccw past the lpf)? The most impressive thing is the crossover eq being able to create frequency gaps. So slotting other instruments together sonically becomes alot easier before any post recording eq. AND everyone can be heard. That's huge.
Thanks, Tim! You can get suprising results using the crossover in non obvious ways. I'm still exploring it. It's a deep rabbit hole for sure!
the quality is mad good
